A Borderlands Christmas

In late 2019 we were approached by 2K ANZ to create five highly detailed custom controllers themed after characters from Borderlands 3. As big fans of 2K and the iconic Borderlands series this was a no brainer.

We set to work creating digital designs based on the four Vault Hunter characters from the latest game in the franchise, each controller featuring characteristics that relate to each character. A late addition had us also put together a concept for a Children of the Vault themed controller.

After a few tweaks requested by the 2K and Gearbox teams the designs were signed-off and production commenced. While each controller is unique in it’s styling, all five designs were tied together with a scrap metal styling incorporating engraved panels lines, 3D panels, textures, and screw heads. The final process on each controller was adding the iconic “cel shading” outlines to create the cartoony, hand drawn styling that Borderlands is known for. We also created a set of 5 controller stands to go with the controllers for displaying them in style.

The controllers were given out as Christmas presents in December to five of 2K Australia’s lucky streaming partners who shared some amazing photos of their gifts (see below gallery). We were even lucky enough to receive a special Borderlands bottle of red as a Christmas thank you from the 2K team.
